What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.

It is a structured psychotherapy designed to help people work with distressing memories and the beliefs, emotions, and body sensations connected to them. EMDR follows eight phases that include history-taking, preparation, assessment, processing, closure, and reevaluation.

What happens in EMDR sessions?

During some phases, I may guide back-and-forth eye movements or use another form of bilateral stimulation, such as alternating taps or sounds. You remain awake and in control.

EMDR is more than eye movements, and it does not erase the past.

The aim is to reduce present distress and help a memory feel less overwhelming.

Do I Have to Tell Every Detail?

No. EMDR does not require you to describe every detail of an experience aloud. You choose what to share, and you can pause at any time. Readiness and safety are assessed throughout the work.

What EMDR Therapy Looks Like

In EMDR therapy, we begin with what brings you to therapy, your relevant history, strengths, goals, and whether EMDR may be appropriate.

Preparation focuses on building grounding and coping skills and agreeing on stop signals for to highlight that you are in control of the entire process. Process will begin once adequate preparations are in place.

During assessment and reprocessing, when you are ready, we identify a target memory and use brief sets of bilateral stimulation while noticing what arises, and you remain awake and in control.

Each session ends with closure and reevaluation, including grounding, and at later sessions we review changes and decide together what comes next.

What Can EMDR Help With?

EMDR may be used to address:

• PTSD and trauma-related symptoms
• Distressing memories or nightmares
• Childhood trauma or abuse
• Accidents or medical trauma
• Sexual or relationship trauma
• Anxiety or panic tied to past experiences
• Grief or loss
• Shame, guilt, or negative self-beliefs

EMDR is not the right fit for every person or concern. We will decide together whether it is appropriate for your needs.
